Has the same mountain been staring you in the face, year after year? Perhaps New Year hit this year and you got excited, thinking, ‘Finally, I’m going to nail it this year!’… only to find yourself here in February with everything looking pretty much the same. This cycle doesn’t need to keep repeating itself, and I’m going to show you how to make this year the year that this mountain actually moves!
Most coaches jump on board from the beginning of January, to inspire people to do something new and different with their year. Not me… I’ve been content to wait until February, because it’s almost like we have to wait for the New Year hype to wear off before we can see the real picture of what’s actually going on in our lives. I’m not only about inspiration. I’m about heart transformation. Inspiration can come and go, but heart transformation is what changes our lives, not just for some of the time, but permanently. Are you ready for some change to both your life and your heart this year?
The number one thing that is important to realise is that:
Everything we experience in our lives is a result of what is going on in our hearts.
If we want to know what is going on in our hearts, we simply look at our lives in about February. That’s when things get real. What generally happens is that in January, everyone rocks up feeling energised, after having had a bit of rest over the Christmas and New Year break. They’ve had a chance to feel the pain of not completing their goals from the year before and to think about all the effort they are willing to put in this year to ensure it doesn’t happen again. So they start the year with a mixture of renewed determination and renewed energy, to set themselves to do what they couldn’t before. When the year begins, they are willing to really push themselves hard.
Yet what actually happens after a fortnight or a month of overextended effort to do more than the year before? That extra effort becomes once again exhausting, life becomes all-consuming and people go back to their defaults.
Defaults are our heart beliefs. They are like the program that our heart is set on. These are the settings we naturally go back to once we’ve stopped expending toil and effort… they’re beliefs about how we see ourselves, how we see God, what we believe we’re capable of, our comfort zones, our habits, how we relate to money etc…
For example, we may believe in the core of our hearts that God is an angry judge who is impossible to please, and then wonder why year after year we can’t seem to hear His voice or get close to Him. We might have heard religious lies about poverty being our only option as we grew up, and then wonder why we can’t seem to get past a certain level of income. When the extra effort of getting up earlier to spend time with Him yet hearing nothing, or putting extra hours into building our business is not fruitful and becomes unsustainable for our lives, these default heart beliefs just keep dragging us back to where we’ve always been. Same mountain, different year.
So what if change in our lives is not more about doing… but more about believing? I have a dear friend who says that the hardest thing we will ever do in our faith walk is to simply convince our hearts to believe that what God says about who we are and what we can do is true. Well for sure it is! What God says about who we are and what He has provided for us is so amazingly good that it’s hard to believe… we find ourselves still looking for the catch or what we have to do to earn it. Yet the King has gone ahead of us and made all provision for us in the Kingdom. If we’re not seeing the promises of God manifest in our lives, it’s not because they’re promised to some people and not to others, or that God is holding out on us. Quite likely, there’s something He can’t get through our hearts because our defaults are saying something different to us than what God is saying. In other words…
Our lives run on default and the only way to change our lives is to change our hearts.
I want to see for you this year, a change in the beliefs (the default settings) of your heart, so that you can see actual changes manifested in different areas of your life. Not because you toiled more, exhausted yourself more or flogged yourself more. Not even because you tried a different approach necessarily (unless Holy Spirit has led you to do it), but because you made an adjustment in your believing and because you lived from an intimate relationship with Christ where he could download to you the things that would bear fruit and save your time that would otherwise have been wasted following pursuits that would not bear fruit.
At the end of the day, if you keep doing what you've always done, you're going to get the same results as you’ve always gotten. Instead of attacking this mountain with exhausting, external effort and watching your default settings dictate the outcome anyway, let’s change tactic and watch your life change from the inside out by changing what you believe.
When you change the default settings of your heart, you don’t just change one area of your life – you change every area of it! This is how you live your wide-open, spacious life, where there is victory on every side.
