The Keys to Discovering YOUR Purpose

ree

As a coach, the question I hear more than any other is, "How can I know my purpose?" Perhaps this is a question you are asking today. Many people believe that they may have a purpose... but if they do, they just can't seem to connect with what it is. If that describes you, be encouraged. Knowing the reason for which God created you is far easier than you think. Why? Because you don't have to look to the ends of the earth to find the answer... you don't have to do a degree to work it out... Your purpose has already been written by God on the pages of your heart. All you have to do is look within...

ree

So let's look inside the pages of your heart right now, and see what God was thinking when He created you. There are 5 keys which will help you to unlock what your purpose looks like:

Key #1: Believe That You Have a Purpose

EVERYONE HAS A PURPOSE. When you read that statement, 'Everyone Has a Purpose', what do you immediately think? 'Yes I do!', or 'Yes, everyone has a purpose, except me...'

The primary lie which keeps us from uncovering our purpose is the lie which says that we don't have a purpose. We may believe that others have a purpose. But in our core, we don't think we're worthy of having a purpose. We don't think we're good enough... that God wouldn't have bothered to put something amazing inside of us. Or that if He had, we'd already know it... and because we don't know our purpose, we mustn't have one.

If we don't believe that we have a purpose, or that we are good enough to be worthy of having a purpose, we will never connect with what we have been created for - it's that simple! Proverbs 29:18 tells us that where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint. If satan can convince you that you do not have a purpose, he can get you to walk on all sorts of paths and places that have nothing to do with your God-given assignment, and keep you fruitless.

The truth is that every single person has a God-given purpose - one which He crafted and put together even before we were being formed in our mother's womb (Jeremiah 1:5).

It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, He had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose He is working out in everything and everyone. Ephesians 1:11 – 12 (MSG)

'Everything and everyone' includes YOU! He has not only given you an amazing, world-changing purpose, but He also greatly desires to show it to you, so that you can live it!

Key #2: Consider Your Design

God is both strategic and a visionary. He doesn't create anything second rate; nor does He waste time and resources. When He created the world and mankind over six days, He looked at the work that He had done and saw that it was very good (Genesis 1:31). That's the only kind of creating He does - very good!

Can you imagine the level of strategy and vision required to bring into existence every little detail of every single animal, plant and created thing... all interwoven into systems and natural laws, one thing dependent on the next, each with a precise purpose which, if not fulfilled, would have huge ramifications for the rest of creation. Every single part of every single thing He created fit together as part of the whole vision He had for the world. So we can safely know that when God set Himself to create YOU, He put no less thought into it! He approached this joyous task with the same level of strategy and vision - because that is who He is! He creates with absolute excellence, for a strategic and Divine purpose.

Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out; you formed me in my mother's womb. I thank you. High God - you're breathtaking! Body and soul, I am marvellously made! I worship in adoration - what a creation! You know me inside and out, you know every bone in my body; You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something. Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth; all the stages of my life were spread out before you, the days of my life all prepared before I'd even lived one day.

Psalm 139:13 - 16 (MSG)

When the Lord formed you in your mother's womb, He had a plan. A blueprint. A design which fit into the big picture plan He is carrying for the world. God is not into frustrating either Himself or us! Therefore, He has certainly designed YOU with your assignment in mind. And if we can identify your design, it can help us to uncover the assignment that you have been designed to fulfil. What strengths did He weave you together with, and how did He connect your soul and body to effortlessly do some things really well and with so much more ease than others? By looking into your natural design, you will find hints to your purpose.

Key #3: Consider Your Desire

What are the desires of your heart that just never leave you? What is your great passion - the thing or things you can never get enough of doing? What are the desires you've held in your heart since you were a child? What are the desires that have been unfulfilled in your life so long that you have forgotten them, and only thinking about this now has prompted you to remember them?

I firmly believe that desires have actually been planted in our heart by the Lord, and they serve to lead us towards the assignment for which we were created. The problem is, there is so much fear around desire because we all know it's possible to desire things that are not of God. We have a spirit and we have a flesh. However, so many people are so afraid of following their flesh, that they actually shut down their ability to hear what their spirit is saying. If we will prioritise our connection with God and walk in intimate relationship with Him, we will certainly hear the desires HE has placed within us, which will show us what He has created us to do.

Key #4: Consider the Justice Which is in Your Heart

We are inherently wired to bring justice to our world, because the God of justice lives inside of us.

God's intention has always and will always be to see the earth come into that Kingdom place of peace, joy and righteousness. This, of course, was only made possible by the willingness of Jesus to be the sacrifice which brought about not only justice for us, but gave us the authority and power we needed to be able to exercise justice on His behalf for others. We have an assignment to go about our lives and where we see something that is out of alignment with His will, to bring it back into a place of alignment and restoration. No more obvious area do we see this in than in social justice issues, such as abortion, sexual slavery, child abuse, and the like. We may be called to help solve a glaring area of injustice, or something more subtle. Whatever the gap between God's will and reality - whether it be in our families, communities or nations - God wants us to work with Him to close it.

Key #5: The Confidence to Act

No matter what Holy Spirit reveals to us about the purpose He has written on the pages of our heart, if we do not act on what He has shown us, we will never accomplish the assignment we have been purposed to. The confidence to act comes with knowing that it's actually Christ in us who is going to accomplish our purpose (Gal 2:20). We are also moved to action as we consider the impact on our fellow believers and the world if we do not play our part in God's strategic plan. Our purpose will always be far bigger than we can ever accomplish on our own, because God wants us to take His hand and walk with Him by faith. Don't be discouraged if you don't have the full picture, because we're not designed to. But He asks us to trust Him and take the first step, even if we don't know how on earth we'll get to the promised vision. After all, He does.
